Red String of Fate wedding ritual, tying your love

The Red String of Fate History

The Red String of Fate Ritual, also referred to as the Red Thread of Fate and String of Marriage, is an East Asian belief originating from Chinese legend. According to this myth, the matchmaker god of marriage and love known as “Yue Lao” the old man on the moon, would tie an invisible red cord around the ankles of those that are destined to meet one another and ultimately marry.

What Does the Red String of Fate Symbolise?

It means that the two people connected by the red thread are destined lovers, and it is believed that they will find each other regardless of place, time, or circumstances. As they grow, the string gets shorter and brings them closer. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never break.

Red is used in this ritual as in Chinese culture this colour symbolised happiness.

So Why Include This Ritual In Your Wedding Ceremony?

This is a great way to show you believe that by finding each other, your destined partner and lover you have found your soulmate. As two people that are connected in this way, the couple feels bound together by fate itself.

So what better time to perfectly symbolise your eternal love, before, now, and forever, than at your wedding ceremony.

How Does This Ritual Work?

This is a real simple ritual that is full of so much meaning.

To show that the couple believes that their bloodlines are connected through an invisible red cord and this and their love can never be broken, they together tie a red string around each other’s little finger.

This can happen at any time during the ceremony but I like to include it after the legal documents have been signed and just before the couple is pronounced married. I choose this time as it’s a little more challenging for the couple to do it earlier in the ceremony. Exchanging rings and signing documents when your little fingers are tied together can be hard, so that’s why after all these events have taken place is the most practical time to perform this ritual. But if you decided to have this ritual as a part of your ceremony it will totally be up to you when it is included.
