Building Your Reception – Dancing

One of the most fun elements in many weddings is dancing. Although there’s a specific order for the traditional wedding dances, any part of this order can be changed or left out.

The couple is the first to share a dance. Many couples like to practice what they will be doing or how they will dance, as they know everyone will be watching. Make sure when you are selecting the music for this dance you choose one that you love and is meaningful.

The next set of dances is reserved for the couple and their parents. In a heterosexual partnership, the bride dances with her father, and the groom dances with the bride’s mother. After that, the bride’s parents dance together, the groom asks his mother to dance, then the groom’s parents dance together. In a same-sex wedding, the important thing is for the couple to have an opportunity to dance with their parents, their spouse’s parents, and for the parents to have time on the dance floor with each other.

Next, it’s the wedding party’s time on the dance floor and the opportunity for them to dance with the newlyweds. After this song, all the other wedding guests are invited to join in.

Remember that the main goal of dancing at weddings is for the guests to have fun celebrating the newlyweds.

If you are having a DJ then I will pass your special dance music selections on to them. If you’re having a live band then can you let me know what songs they will be singing for the dances you have selected to do? This is so I can add it to the run sheet.

Wont to shake things up during your reception? Then why not have a surprise dance that has been choreographed or do a surprise flash mob wedding dance. The possibilities are endless and how much fun for everyone you choose to be involved in the dance and for all your guests that get to watch.

The following youtube video is a great surprise flash mob wedding dance involving all the wedding party and the newlyweds.

Regardless of what dances you decide to do, the style of these dances, or the order, enjoy. This is a celebration, and all your guests both on and off the dance floor should have a great time.
