Naming Ceremony

Naming, Welcoming and Baby Blessing Ceremonies

The birth of a child is a joyous occasion and has traditionally been celebrated with a religious Christening.

Today, however, many parents prefer to celebrate this special event with a non-religious Naming ceremony.

A naming ceremony is a lovely way of welcoming a precious new life into your circle of family and friends.

And a naming (or welcoming or blessing) ceremony is not only appropriate for the arrival of a new baby. They are suited to special occasions for anyone, at any age. Uniting of step or adopted children within a family, an adult name change, or even laying the first brick of your dream home are all excellent reasons to hold a ceremony to mark the occasion.

One of the wonderful things about a naming ceremony is that there are no ‘rules’; there is no right or wrong way to conduct a ceremony.

Your ceremony may involve just one person, a few people or a gathering of your family and friends. It may be a simple dedication or as extravagant as you can imagine. You may wish to recount stories and milestones or tell of the dreams and hopes you have for a child’s future. Poems, readings and quotes of personal significance can also be used throughout the ceremony

A naming ceremony for a child involves the important people in that child’s life: family and special friends. Parents have the opportunity to ask other adults to take a supportive role through childhood to adult life. Today there are many terms used to symbolise these special people. They can be known as godparents, guardians, guide parents, earth parents, mentors or supporters. All, however, have the same meaning of being a support to your child throughout their life.

Often a symbolic gesture is also made such as the lighting of a candle or planting a tree. In addition, certificates are presented to parents and other special people as a record of the occasion.

While the ceremony and accompanying documents don’t have any legal status, they are a wonderful way to welcome your child and celebrate them as they begin their journey through life, or highlight another special occasion.

If you are considering a Naming ceremony it will bring me joy to help you with your special occasion. We will work together structuring a ceremony that best embraces what is important to you.
